On 18 June 2025, the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization adopted a new resolution on the Question of the Malvinas Islands, renewing the UN’s call for Argentina and the United Kingdom to resume, as soon as possible, bilateral negotiations aimed at finding a peaceful and definitive solution to the sovereignty dispute.
The resolution, adopted by consensus and co-sponsored by all Latin American members of the Committee, once again reflects the strong support of the international community for Argentina’s position. A broad range of countries from various regions expressed their support for the resumption of negotiations and for Argentina’s sovereign rights, reaffirming the “special and particular” colonial nature of the Question of the Malvinas, as established by United Nations General Assembly resolution 2065 (XX) and related resolutions.
During the session, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship, Gerardo Werthein, reaffirmed Argentina’s unwavering commitment to the recovery of the full exercise of sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands, and the surrounding maritime areas, which have been illegally occupied by the United Kingdom since 1833. The Minister addressed various aspects of the Question of the Malvinas, including its historical, legal, political, and diplomatic dimensions.
The Argentine Republic expresses its deep appreciation to the members of the Special Committee on Decolonization and to all delegations that, once again, renewed their support for international law and for a just and lasting solution to the Question of the Malvinas.
